The Committee regarded the development of the study of the Social Sciences as especially important in relation both to British Colonial policy and to the development of modern institutions in China. Mr. N.L. Smith, Sir H. Prideaux-Brune and Sir George Moss emphasized the importance of providing for the study of living institutions against the background of political and economic theory emphasis on the Land of putting actual working or institutions. 9. It was agreed that a Department of Modern Languages would be much narrower in scope than such in a Department & modern British university, English and Chinese being fundamental. It was agreed that provision should be made for the study of French language and literature and perhaps more intensively Portuguese by reason of its focal importance.

10. In addition to the importance of mathematics in the normal science courses anc in Social Science (statistics, it was agreed that to develop the tgen aptitude for mathematical studies among Chinese students good Honours courses in pure and Applied thematics should be developed. The Chairman emphasized the importance of keeping in mind that, if good was to be achieved, sound Honours schools in all subjects must be developed.

11. It was commonly agreed that there should be development in the teaching of philosophy and that provision should be made for the study of Indian and Chinese thought against a background tudy of basic Western philosophy. The Chainman thought that provision in a Department of Fhilosophy should be made for the study or the History of Science. Mr. Adams suggested that as classical studies in the West comprehended the study both of history and philsophy so studies of Chinese and English by Chinese students should be developed with the same comprehensiveness.

12. The Committee thought it was important that provision should be made for a Department in which adequate provision could be made for the study of geography on modern methods.
